Hi`iaka is the goddess of hula dancers, chant, sorcery and medicine. She is the favored sister of Hawaiʻi’s volcano goddess, Pele. She was sent on a long arduous journey to retrieve Pele's dream man, and in return Hawai’i became safe for travelers. It is said that when the goddess Hi`iaka departs Kalalau Valley on Kaua‘i with her lover Lohi‘au, she sings farewell to the steep cliffs made fragrant by laua‘e green ferns. Known for their sweet smell. These are for the traveler in us all.
